Paul van der Westhuizen
Bio
Dr Paul, a medical doctor specialised in general practice, has cultivated a uniquely diverse portfolio of roles throughout his career, each chosen to deepen his understanding of healthcare. His hands-on clinical experience spans community and hospital care, notably haematology and oncology, general surgery, emergency medicine, and intensive care medicine. In addition, Dr Paul holds a sports medicine master’s from Trinity College Dublin, has taught anatomy to medical students using cadavers at Queens University Belfast, and has innovated remote community-based treatment services in digital health. Dr Paul’s enduring commitment to doing what’s right for patients combined with the vantage point he holds within healthcare now compels him to innovate where others have not yet.
Areas of Interest
Dr Paul believes in the transformative potential of digital health to make healthcare more personalised and more preventative. Using this as a potential means he is eager to develop scalable, evidence-based innovations that can broaden his impact on patient care.
What You Hope to Achieve During the Programme
Through the skills, methodologies, and ecosystems gained from the DigiBio programme, Dr Paul hopes to move beyond delivering care and begin reshaping how it is delivered. He is particularly excited by the multi-disciplinary collaboration opportunity that lies before him. He aims to learn from these accomplished professionals in order to transition from identifying challenges in healthcare to designing and commercialising solutions that last.
